Banks-ing on Success

I never thought this day would come.  But it’s here.  I’m about to quote you the thoughts of Tyra Banks on strategies for success.  Now before you go telling everyone “that Melissa Rosenthal has finally jumped the shark”, take a look at the list of ideas from a recent in the April 2010 Australian Women’s Health.

Banks was asked to share the beliefs and motivations that have helped her rise to the top – and stay there.  Her advice includes:

  • Ignore the doubters

  • Define your own “success”

  • Learn to delegate

  • Make time for you

  • Trust your intuition

  • Find out what makes you healthy

  • Eat treats

  • Be inspired by others

  • Love your body

It seems to be a well-balanced and thoughtful list of ways to maintain your own drive and determination while also maintaining your mental and physical health.

I particularly like her point about defining your own success.  Many of my clients chase a particular goal or job for many years because “they think they should” or “it seems to be the right thing to do” or “it’s the next logical step”, only to find it unsatisfying once they achieve the goal.  So I recommend spending some time thinking about your own definition of success – what will make you happy?  And how can you make it happen?  An important title and big paycheck are great until you have your first REALLY bad day on the job  - and then what?

And FYI for those of you who aren’t familiar with Tyra’s success, a couple of highlights include: first African-American to grace the cover of Sports Illustrated, Creator and Producer of America’s Next Top Model (14 Seasons), 4-time Emmy Award winner for The Tyra Show and Creator of the Fiercely Real Teen Model search for plus-sized teen models.   Today she is CEO of her own production company, Bankable Productions and is estimated to earn approximately $20 million each year.
