Are your leadership decisions affected by experts?

What's happening to our critical thinking?

In a recent TED talk, renowned Economist Noreena Hertz prompted us to think about how "expert opinions" are beginning to replace our own critical thinking skills.  http://bit.ly/gD3wUT

Have you considered how over-reliance on experts might be impacting your decisions as a leader?

"I need to consult with an expert before making a decision" - it's a phrase I hear often in coaching sessions.  And don't get me wrong, I'm a huge advocate of seeking information in decision making.  But the big question is, are we becoming lazy and replacing our own analytical process with the expert view?

Critical thinking is an essential part of good decision making - and gathering information is a good first step.  But it's not the only step.  Once you've gathered information consider the following:

  • What assumptions were made in giving you the expert advice? And what assumptions did you make in interpreting it?
  • Can you identify any bias or preconceived notions that drove the expert's opinion?
  • Are there any contextual factors that you should take into account?
  • Are there alternate points of view that you can and/or should consider?

The coaching process is designed to question and challenge assumed points of view.  It can be apply to your leadership style, career development and even team dynamics.  If you would like to talk further about how coaching can help you and your team refocus your critical thinking skills please send me an email at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
