Getting Beyond your New Years Resolutions |
So how are you doing with "those" resolutions?
Most of us make them, some of us write them down, and some of us even start doing them. But how do we keep the momentum and motivation going throughout the year?
I wish there was a secret pill that we could take that we would keep us on track with our goals and resolutions for the new year. I would be SO much easier than getting up at 5am for that spin class!
It's certainly not rocket science, and the ideas are hardly new, but I have found a few tips that have worked for me and for my clients.
- Write down your goals - and keep a copy in multiple places that you visit often. On the fridge, at your desk at work, in the car - whatever works for you. But writing them down and shoving them in the bottom drawer underneath a pile of junk definitely doesn't work.
- Assess your progress regularly - put a recurring note in your calendar to check in with yourself. Some people do it monthly, others weekly. It will depend on your specific goals - but what's important is to ask yourself if you're doing what you said you'd do. And BE HONEST.
- Tell other people - making your goals known to friends or family seems to make the commitment stronger. And they can help support you while you work on achieving them!
- Ask for help - if you need others to help you with your goal, don't be afraid to ask for it. Whether it's help from your boss to develop a new skill at work or from a family member to help you eat better at home, most people actually love to help others when they can.
- Help others - giving help to others in their pursuits often provides greater motivation to achieve our own goals. The more you give, the more you get.
- Stay focused - ask yourself everyday, "what are my top priorities today?"
- Be prepared to work hard - most of the things that are really worth having require hard work of some kind. So don't expect it to come easy and be prepared to do the hard yards. The pay off will be worth it.
- Relax- the more stress and pressure you create around your goals, the harder they will be to achieve.
- Get some sleep - make sure you are well rested - your brain will work better and your body will have more stamina to achieve your goals.
What's worked for you when it comes to achieving your goals or resolutions? |
